Word painting was the interpretation of specific words by the music. Literal interpretation of words can be found in this chanson. Bird sounds are imitated vocally with trills and two note motives. Polyphonic textures are contrasted with homophonic sections, typical of chansons and madrigals. The point of imitation and cadences are easily identified. The imitation is simpler than would be found in contemporary motets. The vocal sound effects and short rhythmic motives (madrigalisms) gives this music an immediate secular identity when compared to the large motets.
